Marriage Equality
The Young Greens have always supported the rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people to full marriage equality. While we support the Civil Partnership Bill as a step in the right direction, we campaign for an end to discrimination based on the sexuality of a person.
The Civil Partnership Bill which the Green Party achieved in its term in Government is far from perfect.
It's far from the full, equal treatment that gay and lesbian citizens in this country, that we deserve. If you look at other countries, if you look at Belgium, they had Civil Partnership first, then developed it into full same-sex Marriage.
You can find similar models in some American states like Connecticut, New York - they started with Civil Partnership and developed it. Civil Partnership is a major step forward, but it's only a step. The final step has to be full same sex marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples.
